Toronto Port Lands still up in the air

The Port Lands by Cherry St. is considered prime real estate, so why is it taking so long for any sort of development or revitalization to happen?

Back in 2011, council voted to scrap Mayor Ford’s idea of a tourist attraction for the area, which included a giant Ferris wheel and super mall. Fast forward today, and the Port Lands is in the hands of Waterfront Toronto again; and although there have been talks of some sort of revitalization, nothing has really been done all these years because costs are simply too high – such as flood proofing the entire area.

However with pressure to fast-track development, we will see a proposal for the Port Lands come this fall. Like many Torontonians, I too am hoping that the Port Lands will import some sort of greenery and park space, and not transform into some cookie-cutter community. It would be nice to see a mini version of Stanley Park in Vancouver, or Central Park in NYC. Every world class city should have a recognizable park land for both residents and tourists to enjoy.
