New Signage Underway for TTC Toronto

TTC Toronto Tries-Out Its New Brand

If you are a regular commuter of the 94 Wellesley route, you may have already noticed new system maps in some of the bus shelters.  Earlier this week, the TTC discretely implemented new street maps and service poles as part of a trial-run.  These maps are clearly labelled with route markers and are colour coded to indicate the different transportation lines that run through a given area.  While these upgraded maps may seem like a great idea, it will also mean that the TTC must individualize each map at every stop.  Improved signage for the entire TTC system will cost the city a fair amount of money; whether or not this will be worth it will depends on the results of the trial.

The head of the TTC Toronto customer service sector, Chris Upfold, explains that by keeping existing infrastructure and only redesigning the brand, the process will be much cheaper; it will also create a consistent look for the transit system.  The goal of this project is not just to provide a more extensive schedule, but to also engage with commuters.  With this being said, the new maps are localized and this means that they are limited – they do not show the entire city’s service.

Redefining the GTA’s Transit System

The new TTC brand has arrived just in time for the GTA’s big push for transit expansion, but how necessary is it?  Before redesigning the presentation of the service, many argue that the service itself is in need of a transformation.  Currently, Toronto planners are assessing the situation of traffic congestion in accordance to the insufficiencies of public transportation.  One recurring objection to transit plans however, is the fact that it will demand a lot of money.  Perhaps, funding can be gathered to expand additional transportation lines instead of rebranding the current ones.

Additionally, although pretty, many people feel TTC’s efforts are unnecessary.  With the popularity of smartphones rising, the need for a scheduling map is almost obsolete.  Mobile apps give the user an interactive experience – something that the TTC cannot compete with.  There are many changes coming in regards to Toronto transit; this will merely be introduction to much larger things in play.
