Urban Toronto reports the Barbara Ann Scott Park, that sits in the shadows of both College Park and the new Aura tower which is tallest residential condo building in Toronto, is set for a massive overhaul. While there has been much neighbourhood debate over the city’s decision to remove the oval shaped ice rink back in 2012, members of this growing community will be pleased to know that the ice rink is slated to be replaced by a skating trail.

Skating trails have featured prominently in other city parks including Colonel Samuel Smith Park in Etobicoke and Gage Park in Brampton. The trails are popular in both communities and this will be the first of its sort in downtown Toronto. Advantages to this layout are improvements to both visibility and accessibility. The trail will also include a sheltered pavilion for skaters to change.
As the city grows taller, the demand and need for safe, revitalized public spaces has been increasing. Expected to be completed in Fall 2016, the new Barbara Ann Scott Park aims to establish renewed walkways with Yonge, Gerrard and Bay Streets. Trees, benches, water features, a play area and lawns will all help to make the space more useful and appealing to passersby.

Reintegrating the park into the surrounding city blocks is the most important aspect of this project but that does not come without challenges. The park is located directly above an underground parking garage which makes aspects of the landscaping and skating trail difficult without damaging the integrity of the subterranean structure.
Are you excited about the revitalization of the Barbara Ann Scott Park in downtown Toronto? Tell me what you think of the plans and what challenges in the comments. I would love to hear input from residents and community members!
