Isbjerget, a residential development in Aarhus, Denmark, has finally been completed. As a waterfront property, Isbjerget proudly towers over the rest of the city, gracing the landscape with modern, natural beauty. Designed by JDS Architects, Cebra, SeARCH, and Louis Paillard, the stunning ten-story structure may be mistaken for a giant mass of ice from a distance. The inventive design simulates the effect of rising peaks and low valleys, one of its many traits that earn it its name “The Iceberg”.
The four architectural firms first developed the concept for Isbjerget back in 2008. After winning a competition for design, the grant was given to begin construction immediately. Five years later, Isbjerget has impressed the world once again having now won the Best Residential Project award at the MIPIM in France.
The Structure
Isbjerget’s ten-story structure includes many different sub-structures. For instance, the first two stories resemble townhouses whereas the upper levels provide penthouse living accommodations. In total there are 208 apartments, varying between 55 and 227-square meters in area. Regardless of which suite you are in, Isbjerget was designed in a way that illuminates each and every unit. The reflectivity of the building on the harbor merely adds to its illusion as the city’s iceberg.
The City
Isbjerget is only one of the first developments planned for De Bynaere Haynearealer. The docklands of Aarhus are said to expect an additional 7,000 residents and 12,000 workplaces once the project reaches its end. At just over 8,600,000 square feet, this harbour will not only provide the new residents with ample space to freely live, but it will also characterize this city as Europe’s largest harbour-front development.
