The Seventh Annual Luminato Festival (June 14-23, 2013)

For the seventh year in a row, the Luminato Festival is coming to Toronto in June — but with change. Internationally renowned Jorn Weisbrodt, a major contributor to last year’s celebration, returns as head-supervisor, bringing along many alterations and improvements. One of the largest transformations Torontonians will discover is the core marketing campaign of the 2013 festival: the poster ads showcase pastel rectangles of eccentric colour, a contrast to last year’s base-blue background. This change, in particular, is intended to reflect a child’s mood, as this is the emotion art should provoke in it’s admirers — the feeling of witnessing life for the first time.

Continuing the theme of childhood, the program will include many outreach programs:

  • L’Allegro Movement Project – Members of the Mark Morris Dance Group, in collaboration with the Toronto Dancing with Parkinson’s Group, join local elementary school students in a ground-breaking performance on June 19th at Daniel Spectrum.
  • Food Program – the 1000 Tastes of Toronto has metamorphosed into the Future Tastes of Toronto: At the Kids’ Table, a program which partners 25 master chefs with students from grades four to six to create $5 dishes for festival attendees to purchase and enjoy.
  • Music Workshop – Students from Regent Park School of Music youth band will have the chance to work with artists from the Arts & Crafts artists catalogue. Students will learn a variety of songs under the tutelage of true professionals.
  • Portrait Design – Karen Kain School of the Arts students will work with Melissa McGrath to create a portrait design that will be wrapped onto a vehicle. The artwork will act as a mobile canvas during the festival.

Luminato Festival Event Line-Up

Besides the typical sponsorship with L’Oreal, Luminato Festival has acquired a partnership with the New York Times, in which journalists will engage artists for on-stage interviews and event coverage. Although a full range of acts can be found in the Luminato Festival’s brochure, here are a few acts headlining “At the Hub”:

Space Cadet, Long Shen Dao, Maxi Priest, Danse Lhasa Danse, A Symphonic Birthday Party, Bog Squad, Danny Michel, Amadou & Mariam, Patricia Cano, Serene Ryder, Music Mob, and much more.

There will be no shortage of events across all genres of art to entertain during the week of June 14-23. One more program to mention, as it is a new to this year, is the Literary Picnic in Trinity Bellwoods Park, an event that combines booking reading with the energy of a music festival.
